Is the Vulcan software compatible with the Windows 10 Operating System?
Trimble has performed initial testing using the Windows 10 Operating System. These tests include installing and running Vulcan applications. The programs appear to operate with no known issues; however, a compatibility issue with SQL Server 2008 R2 has been identified. Please review this document thoroughly before upgrading to the Windows 10 operating system on the computer with the Trimble applications present.
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express
The Vulcan database uses the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express software. This software is automatically installed with the Vulcan application when the Standalone or Dataserver option is selected.
Note: The Windows 10 operating system no longer supports Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.
New Vulcan Installations
When performing a new installation of the Vulcan software on a Windows 10 system, a warning displays indicating that Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is not compatible with Windows 10. The software successfully installs and the Vulcan database is restored as expected. Periodically, a warning message may be posted in the Windows 10 Action Center indicating an incompatibility.
Tip – The Vulcan application is compatible with newer Microsoft SQL Server versions. Please contact your IT Professional for assistance in installing and setting up more recent versions of the SQL software.
Upgrading to Windows 10
When the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 software is already installed on a computer being upgraded to the Windows 10 operating system, the SQL Server incompatibility message is not displayed.
Some functions in Vulcan may provide a list of SQL Server instances, allowing you to select the desired instance. This list of instance names is no longer provided and you must manually enter the name of the SQL Server instance you want to connect to. This requires you to locate the name of the computer hosting the SQL Server and the Trimble databases.
Tip - This will be on the local computer system or on a network drive.
The functions affected:
Database connections in Vulcan
Database connections in Trimble Tracking for Vulcan
Database connections in all communications software (VS Control, VC Control, VS Control II, and Companel)
Blank Numbers, Piece Number, and Cut Order values do not display properly in Sheet Review; however, these values show properly on reports.
Database Maintenance: When opening the Database Maintenance program, an unhandled exception displays; however, when you click Continue, the program works as expected.
